How Does It Work?
The Green Cone TM food composter is an innovative yet simple system. The main ingredients for proper functioning are sunshine, air and bacteria. The system converts food waste into water and carbon dioxide. In fact 90% of what you place in the system is converted to water and absorbed into the soil.
Unlike other garden composters that sit on top of the ground, the Green Cone TM digestion basket is buried in the ground. This unique design prevents odors and access by animals as food wastes decay. It is important to note that the system is not meant to compost hedge cuttings or grass clippings. A traditional garden compost bin can serve that purpose.
The system should be installed in a very sunny location in your garden or yard. Due to its unobtrusive appearance some choose a flower bed near the house and kitchen for convenience of food disposal. A hole is dug that is 32" wide and 24" deep to accommodate the composting basket or digestion chamber.
The Green Cone TM consists of the basket which is underground with two cones that are attached above ground. The inner cone is black to absorb heat with the
outer cone a pleasant green color. In the summer months the temperature in the cone can reach 122 degrees F. There is a small air gap between the two cones that allows air to circulate to help achieve an aerobic environment and encourage bacteria growth that aids composting. It helps insulate the cone in the winter as well.Once your Green Cone TM is in the ground, it is ready to begin work for you. The system includes a packet of Accelerator Powder which contains harmless bacteria of several types that can aid in breaking down fat and food fiber. Add this powder to the cone when it is installed and during winter months. Unlike traditional composters, the system requires no turning.
More than 11 pounds of food waste (25% more than produced by the average household) can be disposed of weekly. A small amount of residue may need emptying after several years of usage. The cone has a lid on the top with a turnbuckle clasp. Food is simply dumped in the top. A convenient caddy to store the food waste in the kitchen is also provided with the system to hold food until ready for disposal.
This system does not produce compost for the garden. If you want a composter that gives you compost visit Green Johanna. Like the Green Cone, it is designed for cooked food waste.
